Windows 10 Trouble : get back the automatic login
Error Trouble : I had my old home computer rebuilt 2 weeks ago and at startup I’ve been able to access everything on my desktop. Yesterday on a security scan it pointed out did not have a microsoft windows password and should create one. Which I did. I’ve now lost the automatic sign in and must put the password in every time I start the computer. I’d like to go back to auto login. Instructions I’ve found on line do not work. How to Fix get back the automatic login on Windows 10?

  1. Hello aj_416,

I’m John an Independent Advisor and a Windows user like you. I’ll be happy to assist you today. I understand you have a problem with “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer” option is missing.

This happens if you set to sign in automatically but you suddenly change your password or computer name.

    Kindly try the methods below

Please try to toggle off “Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts”,
Press Start then click Settings(Gear icon)
    Select Accounts > Sign-in options
Toggle off “Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts”

    or

Open Registry Editor then navigate to the following path

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPasswordLessDevice

On the right side pane, double click DevicePasswordLessBuildVersion DWORD
Change the decimal value to 0
    Close Registry Editor
    Restart your PC

You will now have the “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer” option under User Accounts/netplwiz

Kindly let me know if this helps or if you have any further concerns.

    Kind regards,

Thank you very much for you help John. The Registry Editor route worked and now my wife won’t be mad at me anymore for playing with things I shouldn’t.  This is site is a great help for those of us who don’t deal with anything past the desktop every day. I’m going through some of the online classes but as I’m sure you know, it’s pure overload for most of us.

    Again, my thanks.
