Help Laptop failed. Can I move the purchased license to a new computer? Windows 10

Windows 10 Trouble : Laptop failed. Can I move the purchased license to a new computer?
Error Trouble : I had purchased a Windows 8 Pro license for a laptop that had been on an enterprise license previously. I have since upgraded it to Win10 pro. Problem is that the laptop is now failing with overheat issues. I have another laptop that I’d like to move that license to. It currently has an OEM windows home license. Is it possible to move my purchased Windows pro key to the newer laptop and if so, what would be the proper way to go about it?thanks,Hal

How to Fix Laptop failed. Can I move the purchased license to a new computer? on Windows 10?

  1. Hi Hal. I’m Greg, an Independent Advisor.

Moving activation to new hardware depends on whether the original license is retail or OEM. This is because retail can always migrate wherever you want, but OEM dies with the first motherboard installed upon. Upgrades inherit these rights and restrictions.

If it’s retail and it shows a Digital License linked to your MS Account in Settings > Update & Security > Activation, then you can usually transfer the license by signing into the same MS Account on the new hardware, run the Activation Troubleshooter. See if it finds the old hardware and let’s you move it to the new.

If not you will need the retail key to reactivate via Support, so try inserting it first in Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change Product Key even if it’s the key for the old OS which was Upgraded.

If not contact Microsoft Support by one of these phone numbers:

You can also go here: https://partner.support.services.microsoft.com/… choose the link for Browser help, interact briefly about your exact problem until it connects with an agent.

There is more on hardware changes in this Microsoft publication:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it’s resolved.

Hi Greg, I verified that the old laptop has a digital license linked to my Microsoft account. I went back to the new laptop and did change product key and put the key in. It came back with upgrade your edition of windows and I hit start. Dialog box pops up with unable to upgrade, select troubleshoot below, but there is no link for troubleshoot.  Any ideas?

  3. Hi Hal. I’m Greg, an Independent Advisor.

What key did you put in? If you’re wanting to transfer a Digital LIcense then there is no key used, and if you insert a key it will never activate until you restore the Generic Version key used when Windows is installed without a key.

Read the tutorial I gave you above for moving activation to different hardware. The procedure is to sign into the new hardware with the same MS account as the Digital License on the old hardware. THen run the Activation Troubleshooter to see if it finds the old license and offers to move it to the new one.

But it’s not going to move a license that came from the factory. As I wrote in my first paragraph, moving the license depends on whether it is retail or came preinstalled from factory. Was it retail? Do you still have the retail Key? If so and the Activation Troubleshooter will not move it based on the Digital LIcense, you can contact Support for help moving the retail key.

Your upgraded license will work fine on a new machine as the upgrade converted your license to retail

so after installing drives all that may be needed is to reactivate windows which should be easily done

the troubleshooter is not generally needed, I know as I use retail windows and swap motherboards all the time
