- Hi JosephChudnovsky –
I’m Kevin B. Independent Advisor and a Windows user like you. I do apologize for the inconvenience that you experiencing right now, let me help you sort things out.
Changing the motherboard of your computer requires reinstallation of windows for the windows to work properly with the new board. Windows registry needs to be updated with the change of motherboard that’s why it needs reinstallation once board is replaced with a new one.
As for the activation, that depends on what type of license is installed on the computer.
Did the windows came pre-installed on the computer?
If the windows came pre-installed, then the license is OEM. OEM license are bound to the motherboard where it was first installed. Technically, the product key is embedded on the motherboard and cannot be transferred. The license dies once the motherboard is replaced. If that’s the case you need to get a new license.
If the license is purchased separately, then it is a retail license and can be transferred on any computer or motherboard.
Do you have personal files on the computer that you don’t want to remove?
If so, you can perform custom install of windows. Custom Install of windows will re-install windows on your computer, fixing all errors and missing update components on your computer however it will reset all the settings of your computer and all application installed on your computer will be removed living only your personal files intact and will be moved to windows.old folder inside C drive after process completes. If you want to proceed with Custom Install please click on the link below and follow the steps provided on the link.
NOTE: Please make sure to follow the steps accurately as it may remove all your personal files if the partition accidently deleted.
Once installation completes, you need to check the activation of your computer.
If the windows is not activated and the license that you have is a retail license, please follow the steps on the link below to reactivate windows.
